Lincoln Cathedral Roof Tour

A few posts ago, on 'you must do it' reports from guests, we recommended a tour of Lincoln Cathedral roof.  Margaret and I have now experienced the tour for ourselves and we endorse all the praise.

Despite the stairway climb, it is not particularly taxing and the rewards make any effort feel more than worthwhile.  It's like visiting a revealing negative, as in photography, of the cathedral: much more than an illuminating backstage tour.

You find yourself in the lofted guts of the building, the other side of public grandeur, but the hidden brilliance of vision and the craftsmanship to deliver it are stunning in their own right.  To realise that the height of an oak decides the width of the nave, revealed by the vital support beams; to speculate over the master bellringers' names missing from a wall painted role (Why the gap?  What the causes?): all this 'heightened' the pleasures of this fascinating experience.

And as for the views from the top, they were just part of much, much more.  So, now we recommend the visit personally.
